Old bike parts used to make a big difference

A few weeks ago a lady named Jane came into the shop wanted to borrow some old bike parts for a project. She wanted to use them to make molds for clay. I couldn't help but take an interest in why, so I got the back story...

Evidently there is a shop in Roanoke, VA called Keirin Culture. (The shop website is pretty neat: keirinculture.com) This shop has a cycling team named Kazane Racing Team. Kazane has partnered with the Nianjema Secondary School in Tanzania to provide road bicycles for the school’s new cycling program. Team members will collect used bikes, parts, and accessories from other cyclists in the region at various races and events. The team’s goal is to send over 15-20 complete bikes along with spare parts, clothes, and helmets late this summer.

The team is also in charge of shipping the bikes to Tanzania, at an estimated cost of $1,200. Profits from the Kazane Racing Working Man’s Classic, a three-night race series to be held in Richmond this June, will be earmarked for the shipping charges.

In addition to the bike project, the team is holding a bike-related art auction in late March to raise money for Nianjema. The event is called Velo Sanaa (Velo is French for bike; Sanaa is Swahili for art).

Jane happens to know a member of the Kazane Racing Team, she is also a local artist. Her bicycle parts clay creation was to donate to Velo Sanaa. I asked her if she'd bring it in when it was finished, and she did! Here is Jane and her work of art:

Pirahna Pit Race

This past Sunday me(little Billy) and Brain battled it out at The Pirahna Pit. it was a great race, but believe it or not i came out on top once again!

Snow Bike

So, the regular form of group communication at the bike shop is email. We use it for talking about pretty much everything, including whether or not we should open the shop when theres 3-5 inches of snow on the ground. (Granted, thats not a lot of snow, but, this is Wilmington...'nough said)

Well, long story short, Brian makes a bunch of his usual questionable decisions on Friday night, which overlapped into Saturday morning. In his cloudy state he took it upon himself to mountain bike to work, through the UNCW trails and arrived at our backdoor at 9:50am all stoked at his super hardcore effort, and snow covered bike. Little did he know the rest of us (who checked our email like good little bike shop employees) slept in and went for our own snow ride starting at 11am! (Shop opens at 10) We did eventually work, opening the shop at about 12:30. (Brian rolled in at around 3...lets just say he needed a nap.)

For his efforts, here is Brian, extremely proud of his snow bike!

Guess what today is?

On Dec. 17, 1903, the Wright brothers made the first successful controlled powered flight. Unlike countless attempts over thousands of years, the scene over the sand dunes of Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk, N.C., was more a product of science than art. Until that date -- 106 years ago today -- such flight was largely a product of the imagination or of daring pilots lacking knowledge and much, if any of an extensive future.In 1889, they published a four page weekly newspaper, the West Side News. They built their own printing press. Wilbur acted as editor of the paper. It was fairly successful, but after a year they became interested in other work. Orville became interested in bicycling and won prizes in amateur meets. With inventive genius to improve Orville's bicycle for meets, the brothers opened a bicycle repair and sales shop in Dayton in 1892.

Samuelson, a contractor and owner of MC Squared in Cape May, said he has always tinkered with personal projects outside his work on residential and commercial buildings. A former bike racer, Samuelson said a friend one day quoted him a line from a movie where a brat kid says to a struggling balloon crafter, “Build me a bicycle, clown.”
So he did, making the frame entirely out of hardwood. He and others liked the result so much that he built nearly 20 more from a variety of woods, including mahogany, ash, purpleheart and oak.
The wooden bikes are equipped with conventional cycling components and work just like regular bicycles, which is part of the challenge, Samuelson said.
“Art is usually there to be looked at, and mine has to be functional, so I have to walk this line between making it beautiful and making it perfectly functional,” he said.
Components also drive up the price of materials alone to $700. With each bike requiring about 75 hours of work, the bikes have to be priced as art for Samuelson to make money on them.
The wooden bikes have been in the artists’ co-op, in West Cape May; the Rusty Nail, in Cape May; and Algie’s Place bike shop, in Wildwood Crest, he said. There are also four in the Breezin’ Up clothing store in the Hamptons, N.Y.
Samuelson said he’s working on a new version that could gain in popularity by reducing two things cyclists try to avoid: weight and cost.
“I’m shooting to have an under-20-pound wooden bicycle, and I think it will be one of my cheaper models,” he said.
Whatever the price, his self-propelled pieces of furniture would surely get noticed on any boardwalk or bike path.

One of our most favourite customers, Jerome Boykin, is a Customs and Border Protection Officer with the Department of Home Land Security. That extensive title allows him the right to know of all the famous people coming in and out of the Wilmington airport.
That being said on May 4th 2008 Lance Armstrong cleared customs at ILM on his way back from a vacation in the Caribbean. Jerome, knowing of Lance's arrival ahead of time, printed a photo of him off the internet and got his autograph for our bike shop! Check it out:

This morning at the bike shop our QBP order showed up with a little suprise in the box. There at the bottom, all crunched up, was a fortune cookie! Georgia found it and threw it in the trash, then had a second though...you can't throw away a fortune cookie before you read the fortune! This is what it said:

Marijuana Concealed in Bicycle Tires

DOUGLAS, Ariz. - Customs and Border Protection officers have seized about $11,000 worth of marijuana after it was found stuffed in the tires of two bicycles.
Friday, CBP officers spotted two 15-year-old Mexican boys on bicycles approaching the border.
Officers searched the bicycles and found that the tires of both bicycles were loaded with seven pounds of marijuana.

The boys were questioned and released to their parents.

Old school derr and brakes

This bike was in the shop the other day with some cool "old school" parts. The rear derraileur is the Paul Component Engineering WWW.Paulcomp.com 1995 Powerglide in blue and green. These were all CNC machined in Chico ,CA in a low volume high quality American made mentality. Paul Components are still alive and well today, however they do not make the derraileurs any more.

The other neat part on the bike was the Avid Tri Align cantilever brakes.

As Billy said these mementos need to be saved so here is a memory! Enjoy ! jim

Rickshaw guy - Sean Robinson @ our shop!

Today at the shop we opened the front door to find a man and his dog hanging out on the front porch with a HUGE pile of stuff. Turns out he is Sean Robinson from New York City, and his dog is Cooper. The two of them are riding a rickshaw around the perimeter of the continental US, just for fun!

They were at the shop because we received a new bike for him, which came fully assembled in a massive crate on a freight truck. Apparently his old bike was a 700lbs 3 speed...he literally pushed it up hills, as you can imagine! The new bike is a mountain bike style 21 speed, with a much more efficient geometry, and "only" 350lbs. Sean was stoked on it! And Cooper had a comfy new set up in the back. (He also got a new squeaky toy, gift from TWD!)

Sean's plan is to escape the fast life of being a chef in NYC and pedal until hes ready to go home. From Wilmington he is heading to Charleston, Atlanta and then spending Christmas in New Orleans.
